November 10, 2014 at 3:44 pmHi Peter:
Thanks for your email and the permission to nag.
I am confused by your reply, first you mention not to put Media Cache file son the network because it would constantly generate PEK and CFA files but then you mention that it’s ok to point 5 machines to the same fodder for Media Cache Files.
So just to make sure, with 8.1 it’s ok to point several machines to the same folder for Media Cache files,
but we should keep the Medica Cache Database Local. And th least questions is if this rule also applies to After Effects,
Thanks a lot!

November 12, 2014 at 5:50 pmHi Alex,
Sorry for the delay. Yes, the Media Cache database should be set to the local machine on each system.
Hope all goes well!

November 12, 2014 at 8:20 pmThanks Peter:
We are upgrading and we’ll try this. After more experimenting we have been able to determine that the AJA io4K does not work very well compared to the ioXT as far as playing back audio. We are all AJA based so can not test blackmagic, but we will contact AJA next to see if there are any developments to fix these issues.
Thanks again,

November 12, 2014 at 11:46 pmHi Alex,
Our experience with Io4K too.
We’ve ended up taking the audio out via line out instead of via card, pending a fix.– – –

April 21, 2015 at 10:18 pmPeter you’re responses were extremely helpful!
One question for you…
We have two editors working on the project on the SAN – and both are importing clips when they need them(stock footage job). Does it matter if one computer is importing clips and the other computer just imports the project folder of those clips? Does it matter which computer is generating the Media Cache Files on import if the other computer accesses them? We seem to be a bit laggy on starting up the projects and when importing each other’s projects to grab some of their bins/sequences etc. Any thoughts? Thanks!

April 27, 2015 at 7:29 pmSo is having a central Media Cache Database/Files folder on a shared SAN still not recommended?
Here is my situation. We have about about 18-20 different systems accessing our SAN. Most are via a fiber network. A few are via Cat-5. The systems using CAT-5 have 9tb raid arrays built in and I can set those to be the media cache for those systems, but the other systems only have 500gb ssd and they fill up fairly fast. Deleting all the Media Cache Files can be a pain because there are usually about 10 or so different user profiles on each system due to a variety of freelance editors that come through. For those systems I wanted to set the Media Cache as a single folder on the SAN and periodically sort the files by date and delete all files that are over a month old. (We are a Ad Agency so projects tend to turn over pretty often) Is this something that is not recommended still or should I be ok doing this since most of the systems are connected via fiber?

April 27, 2015 at 7:51 pmAlso, if this is do able, what would be the best way to make the folder on the SAN the default Media Cache for all users? Is this possible? Or would it have to be updated for each new user on each system?

October 21, 2015 at 6:17 pmHi Anthony,
Did you ever get an answer to your situation, either on these boards or elsewhere? Just curious as I’m in a similar boat and have resorted to spending lots of time deleting media cache files on each computer, inside multiple user accounts.
Thanks!

October 21, 2015 at 6:30 pmNegative. I have never found a good solution for this. I have had problems saving cache files to the SAN so I am now looking into possibly setting up a shared folder on each computer and our IT department is looking into a script that would run when someone logs into a computer for the first time to set the premiere cache folder to the shared folder. That way it is easier to periodically clear the cache files. Still dealing with the individual user issue though.

November 9, 2015 at 3:21 amWhat were your issues saving the cache files to the SAN?
We just got an editshare system installed, and to save having to rebuild media cache files, I was hoping to set the location to a volume all users have access to?
