CUDA update causes Premiere Pro 7.2.2 to crash on startup!
Hello everyone,
An editors worst nightmare. I have an ATI Radeon Card 5770, in my 2008 MacPro, running OS 10.7.5, and I’ve got a 2 x 2.66 Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon, with 16 GB Memory, so yes, it’s a bit older, but I’ve updated ad upgraded it, works fine for my needs.
I was running an update on my “Cuda” driver from Cuda driver v5.0.45 to 5.5.45, and after the upgrade, Premiere Pro 7.2.2 would not boot up. It would quit on start up. Very Very Scary!
So, I went back to the Cuda website and downloaded and re-installed v5.0.45, and now, Premiere Pro starts up fine, no problems at all, thank heavens!
Can anyone give me any ideas what’s going on or what this is all about? When I finally finish my edits in 7.2.2, I plan on moving to Premiere 8.0.1, just don’t want to upgrade mid-projects, so.

Hi Tom,
I’d guess that it has to do with the fact that you don’t have a CUDA card in the system – or at least what you described in the thread. CUDA is only for NVIDIA cards, you said you have an AMD/ATI card which would use OpenCL.

I guess my next question would be don’t you have to have some form of cuda or a cuda driver installed to run Davinci Resolve, or when you install DR, doesn’t it automatically place a cuda driver on your Mac? I read on a forum about someone saying this is how DR mounts from cuda or from off a detected cuda driver? I also read on another forum where people deleted the cuda framework folder from in their library on their Mac and that helped, but I’m nervous not to delete any library framework folders on my Mac risking functionality issues. As long as I don’t upgrade my cuda driver to the newest driver, premiere runs ok as before, but like I mentioned, it doesn’t make sense anyways, cause I don’t have a nvidia card anymore, I’ve got an ATI 5770 inside.
There is a problem I’m having with detecting a newly added 3rd monitor, Mac doesn’t see it. Does this mean I need to update my ATI 5770 driver? And is that safe?
Last question: with this ATI 5770 card being “Open CL” can I use my system ram for premiere or is this still a run on software only issue still? I’m running software only, cause I think my card isn’t supported. Does the new Premeire 8.0 support more cards like ATI 5770?

Well, uh, I think you would want to ask the Blackmagic folks on that one…
At the end of the day, CUDA is only for NVIDIA cards. You have an ATI card and CUDA won’t help you one bit. In Premiere Pro, you should have an option for OpenCL which is a cross platform technology which works with both NVIDIA and ATI cards that meet the proper specifications.
Take a look at this and hopefully it helps you
I would uninstall CUDA altogether unless DaVinci somehow needs it even in the absence of a CUDA enabled GPU.

I used Open CL on my 2012 Macbook Pro with an Intel GPU for months after Pr CC 7.2.2 was released with no problems because I didn’t realize the CUDA card that is also in this machine card needed a driver 🙂
Now using the CUDA but don’t sense any significant increase in speed.Robert Withers

Yes and yes. We fixed Premiere Pro CC 2014 (8.0) so that CUDA could co-exist on systems with Open CL GPUs. Update Premiere Pro, and this issue goes away. Until then, you should not have CUDA installed for Premiere Pro to run smoothly.
Keep in mind that when you update to 8.0 or later, you must be running on OS X 10.8 or later.

Kevin, so you’re saying that adobe Premeire 8.0 can’t run on my Mac that’s running OS 10.7.5, is that correct?
