Why is Playback of video slooooooooow on iMac??
Hi guys,
I have a question. I learned PP and AE last year and worked with them on my old computer but now on my iMac i’m just having trouble trouble trouble.
My mom bought for my bday an imac 27″ with these specs:
Processor 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MBI just recorded a simple 5 minute 1920×1080 video on my nikon camera and even set the playback in Premier pro to be 1/4 of quality but it’s impossible to work this PP it seems on my mac. It just keeps freezing up and won’t playback the video. It gets stuck on one frame and won’t move from there.
I can’t do a voice over, and to edit the beeping thing took 1 whole day instead of 20 minutes as it would have if it had gone faster. Every time i move in the timeline i have to wait like 20 seconds for it to finally show me what is there in the video.The apple support doesnt know what to do as they don’t know about adobe products and dont support questions about them.
I had a custom build windows laptop with less power, older processor, nividia card 340 etc, but never had problems with PP or AE on it.What is the problem? Is there some setting I overlooked in PP or is it the computer?
Does my mac need more memory or a better external graphics card? (btw CAN i even use an external graphics card like the nvidia quadro k5000? how would i use that card with my imac?)Any advice appreciated.

Thank you for your reply. Actually, I just found a tutorial that showed how to speed it up and it worked.
For some reason PP wasn’t using the mercury GPU acceleration thingy but after adding my graphic card module number to a certain text file like he showed it now works fine.

Glad you got your playback problem sorted out. Using the CUDA engine (or OpenCL if you had an AMD card) is essential when working in Premiere. It’s literally a night/day difference.
To your above quoted question though – no, you can’t yet use external GPU via Thunderbolt. I hope that in the near future a method is worked out to use an expansion chassis and additional GPU’s over Thunderbolt. but as of Fall 2014….not so much.
And if you can afford more memory I always recommend that. Adobe gobbles up and utilizes as much RAM as you allow it….and the more the better. So if in the near future you can spring for 32GB I would recommend it.

Thanks for your reply. Actually we wanted to get the 32gb but when we consulted apple support they said for all the 3d cad i’ll be doing and for premier pro and after effects 16 was more than enough for me.
well i guess they dont’ know everything.

16GB of ram is really minimum for Premiere CC with GPU acceleration and especially with AE. AE has a huge memory profile at this point so 32GB is really where you need to be for a Quad core system. Who ever told you otherwise has little to no experience with Adobe and HD+ media.

Ah yes, the thingy! You must be using Premiere Pro CS5, CS5.5, or CS6. WIth Premiere Pro CC, you should not have to add the graphics card to the text file any more. It will do that automatically for any graphics card with over 1 GB of RAM.
