  Importing an avid project with dnxhd-mxf into premiere pro cs6?

  Hi there,

  I have an avid project which I would like to transfer to premiere pro cs6. I exported .aaf from the Media Composer imported it into PPro and tried to connect with the Avid Media Files which are dnxhd-mxf’s. It reported a generic error. I don’t have the quicktime files or the native material. The avid project is not set up with AMA – it works with the Avid Media Files (mxf-wrapped). Is there a possibiliy that Ppro CS6 reads the dnxhd-mxf’s? Maybe in CC?

  The Avid created DNxHD files work only in Avid and some other programs (Scratch, Digital Vision’s software etc).

  Incorrect. Not only does it work, but if you grab the VIDEO MXF file, it automatically links the audio one. I did a quick little demo here:

  But you can’t convert Avid projects to Premiere. Sequences…yes. And I just did it, and it brought over the media, and the sequence, and linked fine. This is the export setting from Avid I used. EXPORT FOR PROTOOLS, but then modified it thus:

  Yes you can use AAF to move a sequence and move the MXF media over.
  But not all the effects will translate so it works better with simple edits.
  I’d normally provide a guide video mixdown and then remove any unsupported effects before the AAF export. The remake in PPro

  Hi Shane,

  thanks for your request! I exported the aaf from Avid with the suggested settings. I still get an generic error. I also recognized that I have 4 mxf-files with “A-endings” and 1 mxf-file with “V-ending” – no “AV-ending” as in your demo video. I think this describes AUDIO and VIDEO-files or AV-multiplexed files. I also cannot watch the video in the finder-preview (space button) although I installed Avid DNxHD codecs. Maybe I have to check the correct installation somewhere…

  hi dave, thanks. I see. I will stay on avid for this project because a huge rough-cut sequence exists already. I don’t think it works fine to relink with the mov’s. As well I would have to transcode so much footage to mov. thanks again…

  Uh…yes you can. I did…and I showed how I did it in my first response to this post:

  When I tested if this was possible, ALL of my DNxHD footage, as Avid MXF media files, NOT Op1A exports, worked just fine. All of them.

  Hello Ross,

  I am having big problems with this. I wish this would work for me as I can see it in your video.
  Can I ask what Version of Premiere you had? I bought a plugin by calibrated software just to get the AVID dnxhd files in Premiere Pro. Premiere doesn’t realize that the three files (Video, Audio 1, Audio 2) belong together. And it is a huge Project so making sub clips separately would be enormous? Would be happy abut fast help. Thanks already!

  PPro CS6. But I also have Avid MC 7.0.4 on this system. I wonder if that helps it reconnect everything.
