After been reading a lot of post on different forum on Adobe decision on terminate their TLP/CLP licensing program and in the future only develop on their Cloud solutions, I would like to bring a new perspective to the debate to hear Your opinions.

I’m a reseller working for +10 years with FinalCut Pro and Premiere (and like both programs), but when FCP X became an app, we don’t have the same contact with customers as earlier, where we usually have a chat when upgrading, if there computer was good enough, storage etc.
Also a lot of new customers just buy the app with no contact to a pro-video reseller, so the responsibility for success is somehow moved from the reseller to become an individual case.

I now see some of the same behavior from Adobe, where they are going more and more directly to the end-users, meaning that less resellers are going to have the deep knowledge about their products.
This means that users are going to handle more themselves about a functional production environment/workflow, which is more easy for individuals or smaller companies than it is for mid-companies where I think a good relation with a pro-reseller is preferable, since the reseller then can function as an IT-resource/specialist for the company, cheaper than if they should hire one themselves.

I’ve been talking with some of my customers, that just had clicked on some of Adobe’s marketing mails and bought a Cloud solution, that was a bit sorry about the implications when they buy directly from Adobe Store.

How do You see the relations between users and resellers in the future ?

Resellers seem to be less and less important as the internet continues to grow as the main vehicle for information delivery and purchasing. It seems like it’ll be a struggle for resellers to figure out where they fit in the pipeline now. What do they bring to the table that I, as a purchaser, can’t already get elsewhere on the internet?

Most of my research I can now easily do from my own computer – Apple, Avid, Blackmagic, Adobe, Autodesk, Matrox, SmallTree, Convergent Design, Quantum, Sound Devices, SmallHD, etc. can all be easily accessed from my desk any time day/night. With YouTube, Vimeo, forums like the Cow, websites offering training (Larry Jordan, lynda.com, fxphd, etc.) the information is very easy to get ahold of.

As person who purchases for my department, I enjoy the direct contact to my overlords. If I want to buy FCPX, I sign in and download it. If I want CC I sign in and download it. If I need to get a free copy of Resolve I just download it. Maybe this is a generational thing, but the “hassle” it takes to call a reseller, get a quote, authorize the quote, send it back, have the reseller authorize/ship the product it just too much of a hassle for about 85% of my purchasing.

Because the market is so diverse it’s also hard for a reseller to stay on top of all the equipment – Canon, Sony, Blackmagic, Arri, Nikon, GoPro, and on and on and on. Many times with the resellers I’ve encountered I know as much or more than they do. Now there is something to having a personal relationship with a reseller so they can help you out in a pinch or keep you aware of things you may be interested in….
