  Question about Archiving – using Prelude

  Hi,
  Sorry if I am posting this in the wrong forum. The background to my question is that I work for a university and my employer wants me to create a library of stock video clips – like classroom footage, scientific research etc.

  I’m using Prelude to quickly export stock clips to a folder on my desktop. It will then be uploaded to Extensis. I’m aware of the whole issue with metadata as a sidecar not working with Extensis.

  But my questions is would it be better to export these clips as xmp op1a – which as I understand is a platform agnostic wrapper for XDcam footage? Or should I archive these clips as ProRes? We’re editing with Adobe and I don’t see us ever going back to Final Cut. I’d like to give my employer an archive that is going to useable far into the future and has enough metadata so that it doesn’t rely on having employees with memories of what was shot when.

  It’s really subjective. If you’re working within a limited set of frame sizes and frame rates, I would probably go XDCAM.

  ProRes:
  Less aggressive compression
  No practical limit on frame size
  No practical limit on frame rate
  Single vendor video codec (con)
  Single vendor container (con)

  XDCAM:
  MPEG-2 4:2:2 @ 50mbps
  Limited frame sizes (con)
  Limited frame rates (con)
  Slightly more aggressive compression (there are online comparisons, and the differences are slight)
  Multi-vendor video codec, SMPTE standard MXF container
