Downconvert While Editing
Posted by Justin Gray on October 30, 2012 at 5:59 pmI have some 1920×1080 footage that I need to edit into a 720×486 sequence. How do I tell Premiere to scale down the picture automatically as to letterbox it? Both Avid and FCP do this on-the-fly and I do not see where to enable this in Premiere CS6.

October 30, 2012 at 6:02 pmHi Justin,
In Edit > Prefs, check the box for “Scale to Frame Size”. This does not however effect clips already imported. Either re-import, or right-click clip on timeline and manually check the Scale box

October 30, 2012 at 6:06 pmJeff, thank you very much for the quick response! I am going to submit to the Premiere CS6 wish list that this become a feature that can be done on-the-fly to clips already imported into the project. It seems to me that the default behavior should be to have this feature “enabled” instead of having to opt in to it. Have a great day.

October 30, 2012 at 6:35 pmHi Justin,
Sometimes you may desire to have a still or video clip that is larger than the project size, enabling you to zoom/pan around the image while retaining quality of the extra pixels. Scaling to frame size takes away this benefit, so that is why it’s not “on” universally unless you enable in Prefs, and then you can still change settings on individual clips/pics with the right-click method as needed.

October 30, 2012 at 6:36 pmI would also like to have the option to turn on or off Default Scale to frame size.
In previous version i believe it was set default on.
I like it off.———————————————–

October 31, 2012 at 12:39 amHonestly one day you’re going to be glad it’s not enabled by default. I much prefer that the behavior stay as is with the editor making the decision on which clips are to be converted or not. A lot of times when you have oversized footage like your situation, it makes for nice cropping and zooming opportunities.

December 12, 2012 at 4:14 pmI like that this is not a default. However I found this option in the Clip> Video Options > Scale to Frame Size
Not sure if this is what you meant by Edit > Pref.
I should specify that I am working in CS6 and am not sure if this thread was addressing an older version of Premiere.
