Editing and mastering 2.35:1 or similar AR
Hi.
I am currently making a short film and for framing and aesthetic purposes, I have decided to shoot in a wider aspect ratio than normal. I’m am not sure if there is a standard I should be sticking to, but for now I’ll just describe the shape of frame I want as the old 35mm “2.35:1”.
My film will be shot on a combination of a Canon 5D and 7D, which both obviously shoot 1920×1080 (16:9 AR). To achieve the 2.35:1 AR, I assume I will have to crop roughly 14% of the top and bottom of the 1920×1080 frame, giving me something like 1920×817 pixels.
I have many questions for anybody who has done this before, since I haven’t.
Firstly, is there a standardised format for digital filmmaking (perhaps 2.40:1, 2.37:1, etc) that I should use instead?
As I’m shooting on 5D & 7D, is there any way to get some guide frames on the viewfinder, so that I know where my frame is?
Lastly (and relevant to the forum), if any of you were going to do this yourselves, how would you edit the film, and also, how would you export the final product? My guess is that, for editing, I will need to use black matte bars on the top and bottom of the image (as I cannot figure out how to create a 2.35:1 project in Premiere). If this is the case, how do I accurately size and position them? For exporting, I’m guessing that I would NOT want to render these black bars with the video, and instead crop off the bars so that the video size matches the frame size.
Any advice for the overall workflow would be lots of help also.
Thank you.
