premiere pro cs5.5, proxies and AE Linked Comps
Hi everybody, I have to edit a HD music video in PPro CS5.5 and do some effects on AE. I will use low-res proxy files in Premiere Pro so the editing will be smoother, and at the end I will replace them with the original files from my 5Dmk2.
The question is: if in some scenes I’ll use the Dynamic Link (replace with after effects composition) starting from the low-res proxy, when I’ll replace them with the original files, will the “AE Linked Comps” also switch to high quality? or will they maintain the low quality of the low-res proxies that I first sent to AE?Sorry for my bad english, I hope you can help me! thank you!

Here’s my guess…
PPro: clips point to media on drives
Dynamic link creates soft linked clip to an AE COMP that lives inside an AE Project.
That AE Project independently link to media on its own, not thru the PPro Project.
so if you relink the media in PPro to clips at a different location, it will not relink your AE clips automatically to hi-res material. as the AE Project handles it’s linking to media separately.
You will still also need to relink your media on the AE side to connect it to the hi-res working material.
But if your project material is well organized and has the same name….or at least a good logical naming convention….this is not a big deal.

thank you very much! I’ll try to do as you say, and I hope I will not mess up things with wrong re-linkings! or maybe I could use low-res media only for the files that don’t need a “replace with AE comp”!

Well maybe….except….how will you know what those will be until you edit?
If you do things in a more linear process it might work better….
1) edit in PPro with all Low lowres material
2) Get to “picture lock” meaning you edit timing and selects are pretty much they way you want them.
3) Link all footage back to Hi res material in PPro
4) Duplicate this sequence and make rename something like FX so that when you start replacing clips with AE comps you still have your master edit with all your edits in it as a safety copy of your seq.
5) in the new FX sequence…. replace those clips with AE comps and build fx in AE.Alex
