    Hi community,

So here’s the issue: I’ve been cutting on Final Cut for years, and have gotten used to (and LOVE) how the software allows for pretty quick keyboard based editing, which is ideal since I prefer to cut on my laptop and move around alot.

Now I’ve got a project now that uses loads of After Effects compositions, and I love the simplicity of the whole Adobe Dynamic Link setup to move between After Effects and Premiere Pro. However, this requires the use of Premiere Pro.

And herein lies the issue: i would like Premiere Pro to have a similar keyboard based editing option like Final Cut, but it seems so unwieldy. In particular, aside from the fact that the default layout doesn’t even have shortcuts for moving between edit points (page UP and page DOWN aren’t on Mac laptops), I can’t find anything like Final Cut’s “add edit”, “cycle edit point”, and “trim edit point by X frames”. In FCP, you can select the cuts directly, and then cycle between a roll, trim, or ripple edit, and then add/remove frames from either the head of one clip or the tail of another, or move both simultaneously.

Any way to get this same kind of workflow in Premiere? In general, any advice on cutting with Premiere on a laptop to speed up the whole workflow? Thanks for your time and help. I appreciated all feedback. 🙂

I, personally, have tried switching the Go To Next/Previous Edit Point to the Up/Down arrow keys in the Keyboard Shortcuts menu, but for some reason can’t get them to stick.

Are you aware of the preset FCP Keyboard Shortcut that Premiere has? While having a few minor differences, it’s pretty much the same.

    Hi,

Yea, I’ve tried the Final Cut preset, but:

    a) I can’t get it to do the “select edit point” and trim/roll/ripple with having to use the mouse, which is what I’m trying to avoid.

    b) because it seems no developer aside from Apple has thought of the whole “hey, let’s have one key toggle between similar tools” function (B is blade tool, BB is blade all tracks, etc.), the keyboard layout is just more confusing, since it’s similar enough to get me thinking it’s like Final Cut, until I need to access one of those tools.

    SOLVED (kinda)…

FN + UP and DOWN arrows on a MacBook Pro acts as Page Up and Page Down, eliminating need to remap those keys.

Also, T opens up the Trim window, which works well enough for my needs. A bit overkill when I just want to shave a frame or two, but it works. All good there.

    Thanks for the help.

Glad you got it working for you. Ask any other FCP to Premiere Pro questions here. I can probably help you with most of them.

Ok, so one important function I’d love to have in premiere (maybe I just don’t know where to look for it?) is trimming the selected edit point by x frames (Daniel mentioned it in the first post). Not being able to select the cuts directly is somewhat annoying after few years with FCP. I still like Premiere very much, tough.
