  • Losing Video in Premiere CS4

Posted by Keith Emroll on April 5, 2011 at 12:06 am

    Hello!

I recently obtained footage from a videographer who was shooting a live event for me. She shot on miniDV tapes and captured the footage into Final Cut. Since I’m using Premiere Pro CS4, she converted the footage into .AVI files for me within Final Cut and sent them to me on CDs.

After transferring the .AVI files to my computer, I’ve noticed that when I open them directly, they play in Windows Media Player just fine. But when I import them into Premiere, I only get the audio. The video is not present – it’s just like importing an MP3 file.

Does anyone know what may be causing this and what can be done to fix it? Does she have to do something in the conversion process, or is it a setting on my end?

    Thanks!
    Keith

    Hi Keith,

If you right click on the clip and hit properties, what does it say about the video format?

What codec did she use for export?

    H Keith,

It doesn’t look like it’s uncompressed, but at this point, I’d ask for either Quicktime Animation, Motion Jpeg, or PNG. The size will be smaller, and they all work cross platform.

Right now, I’m having her send me the original tapes so I can capture them directly into Premiere. But I will keep this in mind for future reference. Thanks!

By the way, do you know if there are ways to modify the presets for a sequence? There are numerous pre-sets to choose from, but have you ever been in a situation where you’ve needed a customized one?

Sure, just about anything you can think of. Just hit the general tab in your new sequence settings, make your selection, there’s a save preset at the bottom. With the “Desktop” setting (I use this for mixed footage), you have access to about any resolution / frame rate.
