Jagged edges in premiere pro cs4
All the videos I render out in Premiere Pro CS4 have jagged edges around everything in the video. I am rendering .mov’s at 100% quality but it looks pixelated and jagged. What can I do to get a sharp picture like I do when I render out of after effects?

There could a few reasons. First, make sure that the Quicktime preferences are set to play at high quality. Also render in square pixels and make sure the PAR is interpreted correctly if you are bringing clips from After Effects.
A bit more info would certainly help. File origination, timeline format, output/render format/codec used, bit rate, resolution, effects applied.

Thanks, I will try to render in square pixels and see if that helps first. If not I will give you the other info.

I tried square pixels but it did not help plus I had black bars at the top and bottom of the video. Here are all the settings I was using.
Quick Time
NTSC DV Widescreen
720×480, 29.97, Progressive, Quality 100
DV/DVCPRO – NTSC
Render at Maximum Depth is checked
Codec Settings: 24 bit
Optimize Stills is checkedI do not know about file organization or timeline format. I applied no effects I just sometimes add the audio in premiere instead of AE because I find it easier to edit that way

Ah, my bet is on the QTime “quality” bug: DV is not set to play at best quality by default in QT Player.
Open your rendered .mov in QT Player,
Go to Show Movie Properties->
select the Video Track ->
select Visual Settings tab.Look at the lower right. Check the “High Quality” box.
Then ‘save’ to preserve the setting.It’s been stupid like this for about 10 years…

The only setting like the one you are talking about I could find was under Preferences. I went there and checked use high-quality video settings when available. It still played the same way. All the videos that i render straight out of AE look great in quick time though. I don’t think it is the player because it also looks the same in vlc. It is something with premiere I just can’t figure out what. I thought I had done everything to render the file out at the highest quality possible but it does not look very good. Thanks anyway Jeff

Hi Mitch,
Sounds to me like the real issue is that you are exporting to DV, which will wreck havoc on graphics.
I would try Quicktime H.264 instead (start at 3 Mb/s).
Again, make sure you choose a square pixels resolution, in your case 864×480 (1.0)

I tried that Vince but it still had jagged edges around my graphics and text. I tried some other things and found one that kinda fixed my problem. I rendered it out as a quicktime “graphic” and everything was crisp and clear around the edges BUT it gave the video this very bad grainy look. I am about to give up man.

Could it be an issue with the footage not being interpreted correctly from After Effects to Premiere?
Are you working inside a square pixel comp in AE? What is is interpreted as in Premiere?
