The best solution to convert HD to SD in Pr?
Posted by Peter Kolarski on December 4, 2009 at 4:39 pmHi again guys,
As You probably know Pr isn’t great in doing clear/sharp SD from HD footage on default setting. So my question is – what I have to do to make it clear and sharp as it would be native SD from the start.
Should i use some precise setting when doing output or use some special codecs/plugins?? or maybe Use different program and then use Pr as a montage soft.
Any suggestions?

December 4, 2009 at 8:16 pmWell so it’s hard to say anything when You adv. something which You don’t know how it works… :/
And it’s not cheap…….
What I was thinking about was more like special settings in Pr or plugin based thing not another 800$ soft just for occasional transcoding.

December 4, 2009 at 10:06 pmThere are a few ways, downconvert to DV in your camcorder if you have the capability, edit in DV, encode to dvd.
another way is to use Virtualdub with the Lanczos3 filter, you can do a net search for “virtualdub downconvert” for more info -

December 6, 2009 at 10:14 pmThe material im usualy working now is
Type: MPEG Movie
File Size: 3,6 GB
Image Size: 1440 x 1080
Pixel Depth: 32
Frame Rate: 25,00
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz – compressed – Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz – 32 bit floating point – Stereo
Total Duration: 00:19:52:12
Average Data Rate: 3,1 MB / second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1,3333Sometimes i need to export it to DV format (PAL DV AVI or DVD). I found once a tutorial (can’t now) what setting put on Pr (likes how many passes etc) to make good looking DVD from HDV material.
So downcoverting in virutal dub will do just fine? And it’s weird that Pr has problems (as i read not only me) with such operations.

December 7, 2009 at 9:21 amThere aren’t very many NLEs or encoders that do a top job in downconverting, I think its along the lines that not very many manufs in the past expected for DVDs to still be around so didn’t plan accordly and foot dragged, some will do a reasonable job but still get artifacts with motions and off axis lines, virtualdub does a good job minimizing these

December 10, 2009 at 8:41 amI have AFX as part of Production Studio, but I didn’t mention it as the early part of this thread mentioned being able to do it on the cheap, which the virtualdub(free) method is
