Opening PP2 Projects in PP3 = Offline Media
Posted by David Jennings on November 8, 2008 at 2:45 amI am trying to open Premiere Pro CS2 Projects and open them in Premiere Pro CS3 however all the links are broken or offline but the files and clips are there. When I try and establish the links with the Link Media or Batch Capture Option I receive the following error:
The selected file cannot be linked because its type (video) does note match the original file’s type (audio and video).
What am I doing wrong – I am probably over analyzing this…
Thank you.

November 8, 2008 at 4:04 pmAs a quick test, try importing the 2.0 project into a CS3 project.

November 10, 2008 at 2:54 amHi Eddie,
I got the files imported however they were offline and when I tried to linked them, I got the same error:
The selected file cannot be linked because its type (video) does note match the original file’s type (audio and video).
Thank you,

November 10, 2008 at 3:08 pmI have had this same issue, and here is the only cure I have found (with help from Adobe tech support) other than going back to CS2.
Re-import your source clips that are currently showing “offline” (perhaps to a different folder). Reimported clips should come in “online” without issue, but of course, they are not on the timeline.
For each clip showing “offline” on the timeline, load the reimported source clip into the source viewer. Right click on the clip on the timeline, and select “Replace with Clip from Source Monitor – Match Frame”. Timeline clip should now be online. Rinse and repeat for your other offline clips.

February 4, 2009 at 12:37 amHi,
I’m having the same problem. I followed the suggestions above but after I try to replace the clip with ‘Source Monitor-Replace by Frame’, it gives me a ‘Replace Clip Error’ that says ‘The source clip lacks sufficient head material to match to the desired frame’.The only possible reason why I see this happening is that there’s animations and key frames attributed to the clip, but I’m not sure…
Is there another way to relink the media or a solution to this new problem? Thanks!

February 4, 2009 at 1:47 pmCould you possibly have put the wrong clip in the source viewer? Make sure the selected clip in the timeline is contained somewhere in the source viewer clip. Does it do this for all your clips?

February 4, 2009 at 9:47 pmThe selected clip is the same as the one in the source viewer. Luckily, I have pinpointed the problem, unfortunately, I don’t understand it.
However, here’s a little background to the problem:
I’m running CS3 on a HP with Vista with a 1.83 GHz Core duo processor with 300GB and 3GB of RAM, but ppro always crashes as it tries to render a HD clip (all of the files are on a portable hard drive, and all the links are intact). We then try on another computer, a Sony Vaio also running Vista and Premiere Pro CS3 with a 2 GHz Core duo with 100 GB and 1 GB of RAM. The HD clips render on his computer, but only some of the links are broken. Here’s the actual problem:
When the clips are imported by the HP (my computer), it lists the properties as having a source audio – it doesn’t show any tracks. However, when imported by the Vaio, it lists the properties of the clip as having 2 tracks, a video track and an audio track. Hence, why it thinks that the clip does not match the original. The .avi clip that is being imported is the same clip both times. Could it possibly be a problem with the settings of our ppros? Thanks for the help! -
