No image in source window
Hi
I’m a newbie in the APP univers, but i’ve worked with other editors before, but this problem i can’t solve by my self. When I import a video (fx. *.avi) i pops up nicely in the projectwindow, but when i try to play it I only here the sound, and there is no image in the source window. I have to admit this makes it quite difficult to edit anything!
Hope someone can help me!

If you refer to the avi clip… I don’t know
I been using pinnacle before, and it almost just “eat” all kinds of video.
Is it the files I use that must be converted or do I miss something in the premiere installation?

Convert the files you are going to use in PPro. Then PPro will see them properly when you import.

But which codec format should I convert them into?
And why can PPro not import a common codec like avi which by the way shold be supported by the program according to the import “window”?

AVI is not a codec, but an architecture that supports a bunch of 3rd party codecs as well as Microsoft’s DV codecs. There are a large number of apps to do a conversion, VirtualDub is free.

I downloaded the Virtualdub program, but why is it that I have to convert a avi file to a avi file?
I’ve tried converting avi files but they stil don’t work in PPro

You need to select the video and audio compression settings in VirtualDub, like Microsoft Video 1.
A better bet is to use Premiere Elements 4, it will handle most any highly compressed format.
Premiere Pro is designed to use DV and HDV source material coming from a prosumer or professional camcorder.If you will download GSpot (free) it will give you the particulars of your video file.

I don’t understand what is your problem. But, what you should do is: (1) Capture your video (including audio) to hard disk using Premiere, be sure to define settings according to your needs (2) Import video to project window, (3) In project window, click poster frame, then click on play button and watch video (and listen audio), (4) if you want to watch in source window, then drag poster frame from project window and drop it in the source window, there you can crop it and then drag it to the time line, (5) Select time line then click play button in program window and watch video in program window. -
Very short: the problem arises in your step 3 and 4. I’ve no problem importing the video (including audio), but there is no video playing only audio when i press play.
I’ve looked at the steps you specify and I think it’s in step 1 it goes wrong. Because I have NOT used premiere to capture the video (including audio) to the harddisk.
The video files are from different sources, but none of them works in premiere, so it must be something with the specifications of the videofiles?
Can it really be tru that if you don’t use premiere to capture the video you can’t use them in premiere? -

Premiere Pro will import and play many formats of video if the video will play in Media Player…exceptions include Xvid and AVCHD.
