  Safe area/margin

  I’m creating a video that is only going to am played in DVD format, and only on a TV. Should I then change all of my edited video to dit inside the safe margin? There’s nothing particularly important outside the margin, but rather that the whole frame is seen that having bits but off…

  Most folks do not resize video clips to fit inside the safe margin. If the video was framed properly during shooting, it is not necessary.

  I’ll keep that in mind. Now, while we’re on the subject of DVD anthoring, I’m wondering about bitrates etc. I’m trying to fit either 2 hours each onto 2 DVD’s, or 4 hours on one DVD-9. There’s lots of motion, so what settings should I use, eg: M frames, VBR etc.

  For a limited distribution (one or two), dual layer discs might be fine, but they have more compatibility issues than D5s.
  For two hours on a single disc, your average bitrate should be 4400 kbps for video + Dolby audio. Choose 2 pass vbr; 2000 kbps minimu, 4400 kbps target and 7000 kbps maximum. Dont mess with the GOP configuration or you might create non conforming video.
