Marking a Clip in Premiere
Posted by Josh Weiss on February 4, 2006 at 8:11 pmI am an experienced final cut user and am using premiere pro at home on my computer now. In final cut you can put the playhead over the clip you are interested in marking and hit x. This will mark the ins and outs for this clip for an easy insert edit. I can’t seem to find the button or shortcut for this in Premiere, though I’m sure its right in front of my face. Does anyone know what this button is?

February 4, 2006 at 9:08 pmIf it helps…
go to the edit menu and pull up the Keyboard Editor….
They actually have an FCP preset…BUT..not all workflows are exactly the same…so you may still end up looking for things that Premiere doesn’t have or does differently enough that there may not be an equivalent in PPro.
I use both….so just post if you need anything…

February 4, 2006 at 10:16 pmIn PremPro you put a “Marker” on a clip or the timeline using the asterisk key from the Number Keypad.
In and out points use the short cut keys “I” and “O” respectively

February 4, 2006 at 11:27 pmYeah, that did it. The hardest part was finding that in the menus. There’s no way to search, so at least knowing the / shortcut I could then find it and change it to X as in final cut. Thanks a lot guys.

February 5, 2006 at 1:07 amIs there another shortcut to select the clip (under the timeline cursor) prior to marking it, without having to use the mouse?
Cheers,
Bon

February 5, 2006 at 7:16 pmI have learned to accept the fact that it is difficult to escape the mouse in PPro..
You just need to use it…

February 5, 2006 at 7:49 pmHow do the other NLEs know which clip to select from the CTI position in the case of multiple video tracks where clips may overlap?

February 5, 2006 at 10:01 pmIn Final cut there are selections for which video track is active. So if for instance you want to do an insert edit on an audio track that thinks it should go on 1 and 2 you can move these markers to 3 and 4 and the clip will insert to that track. So when you mark a clip without the mouse, it will mark video one as the default track first if it is active, if you make in not active it will go to video 2 and so on. You can make only one track active so you don’t have to fumble around with it too much. Its a nice system.
