  • Video output Freezes when recording voice-over

Posted by Dan Trussler on April 17, 2024 at 6:45 pm

Hi all.. We’ve been having a small issue with one of our clients Mac’s running Premiere Pro.

Using a BM Decklink SDI 4K PCIe card for output and a Scarlett 2i2o for guide VO records.

When recording VO into a sequence, the output to the SDI monitor freezes for the duration of the recording. Video carries on playing in Premiere and the external jumps to the correct frame once recording has stopped.

This has only just started happening – no recent soft/hardware changes.

The only fix we found was to trash PP preferences but, the issue re-occurred the following day. Again, fixed by trashing preferences.

Has anyone experienced this before? Not found any results with the same anywhere.

    Thanks in advance

    Hey Dan,

    That sounds like a bug.

Although, Adobe might suggest that you turn off extensions. Which I hate every time, as it solves their problem, but not mine.

Having said that, it sounds like the ports are fighting for access whilst you are recording Voice Over.
Even if no “changes”, it could be a “back-ground” update have caused the “one-way-traffic-jam”?

Not your exact problem, but this thread might help:
    https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-discussions/blackmagic-cards-stop-playing-back-in-pp-and-then-crash-help/td-p/13391228

Question then becomes; if you run FCPX and/or Davinci and do the same with recording Voice Over straight to Timeline, whilst playing video out to monitor on that Mac. Does the problem repeat itself?
If not, the starting point is likely to be Adobe.

There are much smarter people than me around here, hopefully they will put their wisdom to the thread.

    Hi Mads,

Thanks so much for your reply. It did feel like a bug to me too.

Unfortunately we’re not in a position to install any other NLE on our clients machines to test the same workflow but will definitely flag with Adobe if this issue re-occurs.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Dan
