  • Creating Lower 3rds for Premiere in AE

OK, is it possible to create a lower 3rd in AE that you can then render as an .avi and bring into Premiere to use in a project?
The closest I’ve been able to get is rendering the lower 3rd comp as an .avi, bringing it into Premiere, and then trying to use a color key to take out the background color – unfortunately, I can’t get an exactly perfect key out of it, as no matter what background color I use from AE, I’m using feathering effects on my animation elements so they are losing their clarity.

Is there any way I’m missing to retain some kind of transparent background on the comp from AE when I render it so it’ll simply appear over the video footage as a lower 3rd, rather than obscuring the entire screen?

    Thx!

You need to render to a file format that supports alpha channels.
(ie. Quicktime, .tga sequence, .tiff sequence…)

If for instance you rendered a targa sequence, ensure that you render at 32bit. (24 bit for the colour and 8 bit for the alpha channel)

Now, as long as you have no background layer in AE, when you import this sequence into premier you’ll have a nice lower third animation with an alpha channel.

    hope that helped

THANK you so much – my first time using Creative Cow for help, and I had it in less than an hour! 🙂 Thx again!

    One more tip….
Make sure you use a ‘straight’ alpha matte when rendering from AE,…this will insure a clean key without any ‘funkiness’ in the edges or transparent areas…..
I am not a Premier user, but you may have to tell premier that it is a straight alpha and not a premultiplied…..

… but be aware that your “straight alpha” image might look a little ugly until it is imported into the app that will use it. Worry not: once imported into the app it will be fine.

    Yes, many apps prefer “straight”.

    Hey,

what is a lower 3rd? I am foreign, and havent run in to that term yet. I understand the rest about the alpha and all, so I guess it is a partial layer that contains for example the name of the subject, (like with interviews, I dont know these terms in English)

    Thanx.

Yes, that is a “lower third”, because it occupies the lower third portion of the screen (often it occupies less space than that).

Or if you watch some of the cable networks, they can be so large that they are now thinking of changing the name to the “outer half.” This will leave the middle area of the screen as the “quarantine to center” area of the screen. Then, using the “quarantined” area as that which is having the main show going on, you can then break each of the outer areas — the left, right, upper and lower zones — into what will then be known as “12.5s” (with 50% divided by four, which gives us our 12.5’s to work within.) We can then use the “left 12.5” to accost the audience of the upcoming “Monk” episode, while the upper 12.5 could be today’s latest courtroom mega-drama. Down in the lower 12.5, we could have the news of the latest natural disaster and in the right 12.5, we could have the latest about the President’s approval ratings — or not.

In the end, imagine the possibilities. TV for the multi-taskers instead of those pesky simple stories that aren’t bobbing and weaving, jumping up in your face and telling you about the next great thing that you could be watching, if you weren’t wasting your time watching what you’re watching now.

    ;o)

    A now somewhat caffeineated,

[Barend Onneweer] “And how about all of this on an iPod Video :-)”

We are testing this now — imagine, four little 12.5’s on the iPod for the visual multi-taskers. :o)

(Hey, if it’s good enough for cable TV…)

Wishes for a wonderful new year to you, Ingrid and lil’ Rune. (And tell Jurrie that Boomer finally got the Mellotron he’s always wanted!)
