  • After Effects crashes when I open comps, but not always…

Posted by Ian Dillon on November 5, 2020 at 6:37 pm

I have a new MacBook Pro with latest version After Effects. I’m trying to work on a project from my older MacBook Pro that had a slightly older version of After Effects. I can open comps a couple times then I get a crash when opening them. It can even be a comp that I just had open. I’ve tried all the standard clearing caches, RAM, switching to software only rendering, etc. I’m stuck and can’t work more than 5-minutes at a time now because it crashes. HELP PLEASE. I have attached the crash report.

    Hi Ian,

    You could try:

A – New project and import the problem comps, save as new file.

B – Try to open problem comp / project, and when you get a successful go (you mentioned it doesn’t always crash), then copy and paste the contents of the problem comp into a brand new comp. Then delete the problem comp and save as new project.

Might also be helpful to say what is in the comp – is it footage with wrong frame rate for example, or something with a complex expression or an out of date plugin or script?
