December 11, 2008 at 3:43 pmThe vanishing thing is an old trick: dissolving between two matched copies of the same shot, one with the person, one without. The added touch here is the shots have motion, which complicates the job. You can get that by using a robotic motion control rig, or if you shoot in HD and post/output to SD, you have enough room in the HD frame to move it around in post with keyframing to make the two shots match. Or you can painstakingly roto the guy out, but that’s too much work. Another possibility is to shoot a 10 megapixel still of the empty room and use that as the plate, tracking anc compositing as previously described.
I liked that cover of the Beatle’s song, who sings it?

December 12, 2008 at 10:35 pmThe dissolve to empty room effect IS easy, childishly so, if you lock down the shot and don’t move the camera in any way. Build that effect in a wider than normal frame, then pull that frame in with keyframing tools and you can, within limits, impose the pans and zooms after the fact.
