I know this has been addressed in the past but I’m not coming up with much seaching previous posts.

How are you pro’s monitoring your audio output while editing in FCP? I’ve heard it’s a bad idea going straight out of the G5 to the amplifier. I do not have a mixer and when I output to tape I go straight from I/O via the SDI output with embedded audio to my digiBeta deck.
How do you all have your systems rigged? I have JBL control 5 speakers that I would prefer to hang onto as opposed to using amplified speakers… Are you all using a mixer or are there other alternatives?
    Thanks for anybody’s time.

I think you are crazy for not getting a mixer. If you want a cheap solution, and want to use your Control 5 speakers, get an Alesis Power Amp, a Samson Power Amp, or countless other low end power amps with big volume controls on them, so you can stick the output of your VTR or AJA IO into the amps line inputs. Get ready to use those volume controls !!
You really should consider a mixer – even a $89 Behringer.

No matter what you do – DO NOT MONITOR YOUR AUDIO from the MAC G5 audio output !!!!!

PS – you own a $13,000 XServe RAID, and you won’t buy a mixer ?

I use a Behringher Eurorack UB1204 Pro (8 balanced inputs for under $150.00 and very good quality). My DVCam deck goes into inputs 1 & 2, Betacam 3 & 4, Io analog out 5 & 6, Mac audio out 7 & 8. The mixer’s control room feed goes to a Roland MA-6 powered speaker system (discontinued). Other outs on the Behringer feed the Betacam, Tabletop DVD Recorder, VHS, etc. This is economical and works very well for me. In the future I will probably upgrade the Roland speakers.

Thanks guys. I suspected I needed to go the mixer route. The truth is I’m just over to FCP since August after years on Media 100 where everything was monitored through the M100 breakout box directly into the amp.
I don’t want to go ahead in a “crazy” fashion so I was wondering who can recommend a decent mixer – thanks for your tip regarding this, Lee. I’ll look into the one you mention. What is anybody else using? Do I need to give more info? I generally edit documentaries and use 4 channels in my FCP timeline.

    Kim:
I edited Media 100 from 1999 to 2004. I miss it’s media management and ability to mix resolutions. I don’t miss it’s A/B roll with a graphic track paradigm. By the way we used a Tascam mixer on the M100 output in much the same configuration I use for FCP.

Good luck on your monitoring search.

Same here. I was on M100 from 96-2005. Using a Mackie Mixer then as I do now w/the FCP set up.

Thanks for the info. I’m sure it will all come together with a little more research.
    All the best, Kim

    Kim –
STOP RESEARCHING. you are reading way too much. The Mackie Control Universal is a control surface. It is not an audio mixer, that allows you to attenuate and amplify external audio levels, and route analog audio signals. You need a CHEAP MIXER. Mackie mixers have been used since the day AVID was invented. A nice Mackie 1604VLZ for $999 will do, so will a Mackie 1402, but so will a Behringer UB2442FX Pro for $299 – and so will the cheaper Behringers – all the way down to $89. If you want to do what you did with your Media 100 (of which mine had a Mackie 1604 on it)- just get an Amplifier for your JBL speakers – or get a home stereo receiver. But RIGHT NOW – and I mean RIGHT NOW – stop listening to the audio output of your MAC G5. STOP IT. This is not rocket science, and does not require elaborate digital mixers. You need a simple way to monitor your audio, and there are cheap solutions out there. This is no different than has been done since the beginning of linear video, and since the beginning of AVID.

    Buy a mixer.

So Bob, what kind of mixer do you recommend? 😉

Behringer UB2442FXPro. $299 at many places like B+H and American Musical.
But if you don’t have the $299, they have smaller mixers, like the UB1622 (about $179) which will work.
