preview HD on SD monitor REALTIME
I thought I was able to do this but I can’t figure it out.
I’m editing R3D footage and 1080×720 (from HVX-200) both in 23.98 on FCP. I’m able to view 29.97 SD footage to my JVC SD monitor using the AJA Lhe card. I thought I’m able to preview HD on SD monitor. I get a still frame. But when I change the secondary output to 23.98 and get live playback to SD monitor, the audio goes out of sync. Is my configuration off or do I just need an HD monitor?

Alright. Let’s start with what format your footage is.
You say it’s R3D, is that raw footage, or have you transcoded it or are you using a red proxy?
1080×720 is not an HD format. Again, what do you really have?
You can downconvert HD matieral to SD with an LHe, but if your footage is beyond 1080, you can’t.

Thanks for replying.
The RED footage is being transcoded to Apple Pro Res 23.98 2048×1024.
The other footage is 1280×720 23.98.
More footage coming in today will be from a Sony EX. Not sure what HD format yet. -

The Red footage you will not be able to view in RT as it’s 2K and the LHe does not handle 2k. Even if you had a K3, you could not do an rt down conversion as you are already converting the 2K footage to 1080. What you will have to do is place your 2k footage in your 1080 psf timeline and render that footage. You can then do an rt down-convert from 1080 to SD.

What about the stuff shot on the HVX-200 1280×720? Should I put that into a 1080 timeline, render it, and then be able to watch it real time?

Yep. Make a 1080 23.98 ProRes timeline and drop your footage in there. YOur clips will get scaled up or down and depending on how fast your system is you might be able to play in rt without rendering. You will eventually need to render as FCP will run out of RAM to play your whole timeline in rt.

Now, do you need help with the actual down conversion part of the equation?

Your Kona can do a real time downconvert from your 1080 timelne to your SD monitor. Isn’t that what you really want to do? There’s no reason to put your clips in an NTSC timeline.

I thought I could do real time downconvert with the Kona. Later today, I will try and create a 1080 timeline, render it, and see if I can get to watch it real time. I’ll report back. Thanks.

Yes, all of your footage has to match first of all.
Ensure FCP is in the proper Easy Setup for what you want to edit.
You put all of your HD footage into an HD timeline, if anything has to be rendered, render it.
You take your AJA Control Panel and set your Primary and Secondary Formats for what they should be.
You take one of your outputs and switch it to the SD format.
Now you’re doing a realtime downconvert from HD to SD.
FCP is set up for the HD playback, the Kona card is set up for the SD convert.
