Lots of SD to 1080/23.98
Ok my fellow Kona Cows: need some advice
working at a new facility. booked an online with some old clients. 80% of the film is either HDCAM 1080/23.98 or P2 @ 720/23.98. 20% of the film is stock footage – digi, beta SP, and some DVD.
My plan is to finish in 1080/23.98 – the P2 footage will upscale beautifully with the Kona 3. But what can I do with all that SD? Time is a problem: we can only book 2 days.
My initial thought is to run all the SD footage through a Snell&Wilcox HD6200 box to upconvert it to 1080 – however I’m unfamilar with the gear and don’t know if it will auto dectect 3:2 cadence and adjust dynamically. I’ve never tried to upscale SD with 3:2 to HD with the Kona 3 – but can it do 3:2 removal well or at all?
Any other options if you’re facing 10-12 miunutes of SD footage that needs to be made into 1080/23.98 on a severe time budget?

Use the Kona 3 to upconvert the footage to 1080i29.97. Then use Compressor to convert the footage to 23.98. I do this for all the SD footage to 720p 23.98…and it is all done in real time.

How do you have Compressor handling 3:2? I’d imagine turning on the Frame Controls and setting de-interlace to Reverse Telecine.
update: color me impressed. Compressor handles 3:2 well. Even when 3:2 changes from cut to cut. this is beyond useful!

Correct, turn on the Frame Controls and set everything to BETTER or BEST. Reverse Telecine only works is the footage is 24fps over 30fps…such as 1080p24 or film telecined to tape. Regular 30fps footage won’t look good with just Reverse Telecine selected. Has to be deinterlaced and things set to high quality.

I sometimes do the opposite of Shane and capture SD, remove pulldown to 23.98 and then scale up in FCP. It really depends on the footage. Old film works very very well in this instance.
and yes, compressor’s rev telecine is a great tool.

Does anyone know when Compressor added this? Last time I bothered checking it just had the De-interlace options….
either way I expect all the SD footage to be old surf films – shot on 16. so hopefully reverse telecine works!

It was added in FCS2 (Compressor v3).
