Does TH42PH10UKA support 720p 24?
Hey everyone
I’m considering getting this Panasonic Flatscreen monitor for use with my edit system. Most of the footage we’ll be editing will be 720/24p, and we also shoot DV 24p footage.
Does this monitor support 24p?

As far as I know, all pro plasmas support 24p. 24p looks good on our 50 and 42″ panny plasmas here at the shop.

I think the manual should be available online in the support and documents area. Look in the specs section for scanning formats. My TH37PH9UK (a year old or so) does NOT support 24P in 480 or 720–only 1080.To view 480 24p DV on it, I have to set my Kona output to NTSC 29.97. It works, but it does not look great. Basically, the Kona has to add pulldown to make it 60i and then the monitor deinterlaces it again for display. I have not tried to view 720 24p, but the specs say it only accepts 720 60p, so the Kona will have to convert to that. I’ve only used it for 720 60p myself.
Download that manual and see if you can get knowledgeable help from a Panasonic rep. Maybe the new models do more 24p modes than mine does.

there is NO way to view 24p SD content on anything but a computer display- same with 720p24 – the SMPTE spec for both formats requires that when playing as video that SD adhere to the 29.97 fps and for HD it is 720p24/ 60
Other than on a computer screen what you are asking does not exist, neither of those formats can be played as 23.976 content via a kona card.

…to add to Gary’s comments, of course dv ntsc looks like shite on an hd plasma. There’s no way around that unless you run it through a hardware upscalar first. A 720p60 stream (24p with pulldown) will look much much better.

Any SD will not look good on these displays whether it’s uncompressed SD from your edit system or from your cable or satellite input.
This is why we still have standard def monitors in our suite. We never use the plasmas to review standard def material.

It won’t accept 720p/23.98
Set Kona to 720/59.94 even in your 24fps timeline. Panny Pro looks great. It just dupes frames, and you’d be pressed to tell

There are monitors that claim to display 720 23.976p however. Look at the Ikegami (V-R171P-AFHD). The Kona 3 also lists 23.98p in its spec (as an intermediate format only). I s’pose there are people using that, no? -
When you edit @ 23.98 it is for the most part ALWAYS displayed @ 720p59.94 (which in this case will be 720p24 with 3:2 pulldown to bring it to 720p59.94). The Kona uses 720p23.98 as an intermediate format to cross-convert from 720p23.98 to 1080psf23.98 and vice versa. When you want to view 720p23.98 on a monitor you will see 720p59.94.

Yep and we agree. You should not be doing any critical viewing of SD material with any HD plasma display.

I think my answer is: Yes the Panasonic monitor will work with your 720 / 24p footage, you just have to set the Kona settings AND the sequence settings to 60 for viewing on the monitor.
And it looks totally fine.
Right?
(I am wondering about slow motion or native 24p footage, or any other stuff that is over cranked or undercranked)
Just want to be sure. I love the Panasonic and want it over any of the others.
And yes, I have a Kona.
