Field Dominance Issues?
I have been happily using my Kona 3/ 2.5Ghz G5/ Fibrechannel Raid setup to capture SD 10 bit uncompressed from Dbeta unitll recently I noticed that some of the captured quicktimes have what looks like a field dominance issue.
This is not happening purely on the cuts but if I park it on the frame where there is a cut I see one field from the previous shot and another from the following shot. I looked at settings for field dominance and you can only change the sequence settings…not the capture. Everthing is now set to Lower field dominance. When I go back out to tape and park the tape on the same cut then it is fine. Only when I try and compress something do these odd frames show up.
Is this happening in quicktime or through the AJA or somewhere else in the path?

When you park the DBeta though the player, you are probably only seeing one field, in FCP the default is to see both fields. Where did to material originate from? Does it have 3:2 pulldown by chance? If so this all makes sense. If you only want to see one field, you can set the Kona control panel to do so. Click on the ‘codec’ tab and you’ll see a couple of options for ‘pause on’. Switch it to single field if you like that better.
When you say you are compressing something, do you mean for the web? If so, you should be deinterlacing anyway as computer displays are progressive and will display the fields of the interlaced material.

Yes this did involve a 3:2 pulldown. I did try the setting for displaying one field and that works.
When I compress something and deinterlace it (which I know I should be doing) the picture (especially text) looks bad. I am using Sorenson Squeeze to compress everything. Any suggestions on how to get around this?

Unfortunately, interlacing is the nature of the beast, my friend. You can run your video through cinema tools, remove the 3:2 pulldown and re-edit, but I don’t think you want to do that so I’d look at your compression settings. What are they? Try throwing some more bandwidth at it. What frame rate are you compressing to?
