I have been thrown the task to build a new box for the company. It needs to be done sooner than later so waiting for the Intel Power Macs is not an option.

Basically they are asking for a FCS box that will continue to ingest SD footage from a DVW-A500 for cutting promos but also to be used as HD suite with Client Comforts i.e. outputting to a HD monitor hanging on the wall while serving bacon wrapped scallops. There really is no budget but unnecessary spending is not recommended.

I would assume the G5 2.5 Quad with 4gb of ram is the starting point. I am interested in the Kona 3 but the way I understand it is that in order to output to the glam monitor I need on of the AJA SDI-DVI converters……correct?

I am sure we will be dabbling with HDV as well so do I need another converter to ingest the HDV footage? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I hate to mention it on this board but is the BMD Multibridge Extreme a viable option as well?

    buy the following –
AKA Kona 3 with K3Box (this will give you Y Pb Pr analog HD output to feed your “glam” monitor, as well as a neat breakout box, for $299).

AJA I/O (to get everything else into your system, and allow you to upconvert your Beta, VHS, etc. to HD.

AJA HD10AVA to convert the analog HD from the HDV VTR into HDSDI with embedded audio, so you can send it directly into your Kona 3.

This combo will give you everything that you need.

Just to add, the AJA BCN-450SCLP makes some mean bacon-wrapped scallops, and you can upgrade it to make other hors d’oeuvres with the X999hd attachment.

    Hi,

Bob is right, but the HD10AVA is dual-rate (SD and HD) so that may all you need to purchase for the input side.

    https://www.aja.com/html/products_converters_HD10AVA.html

The K3-Box is nice to have, and adds to the feature ste of the KONA 3:
    – loops and reclocks the genlock
    – adds 2-ch. unblanced RCA audio outputs
    – both the XLR and BNC AES outputs are active
    – convenient 1RU form factor

    Thank you,
