Kona 2 with Sony HDW F500
Posted by Joshua Stanley on September 8, 2005 at 2:07 pmI need to out put a small HD project from my MAC with a Kona 2 card. The requested format is HDCAm. I am planning on renting the Sony HDW F500 just to output this 3 minute video.
Will this deck interact with the Kona card?
Do I need any other hardware/software for these 2 to interact?
I have worked alot with SD, but this is my first time outputting HD are there any other problems I may run into with this project?Any advice would be appreciated.

I recommend you use FCP however so you get edit control and not need to do a crash capture. There are no issues with the K2 and and the Fw500 deck that i know of.
If you are used to working in SD only you need to be prepared for the really large files and long renders in 1080 HD.

Since their is no native HDCAM codec in FCP I assume you will be working in either 8 or 10 bit uncompressed HD. In this case do you have the proper hard drive raid which is fast enough to deal with such bandwidth?
You should plan to rent a multiformat monitor which is capable of displaying HD and SD for quality control checking as well as a HD waveform monitor.

September 8, 2005 at 3:31 pmWaht kind of MAC (i.e dual 2.7?) and video card (i.e Radeon 9650?) do you have? What Versions of everything are you running (i.e Kona ver.?,OS X 4.2?, FCP 5.0.2? QT 7?)

September 8, 2005 at 4:08 pmHey, thanks for the replys. I have a Dual 2 GHz G5 with 3.5 GB Ram, FCP 4.5, OSX 10.4, Kona ?.
I do have an external scsi drive that I was told could handle HD.
But how would this work int the output? Most of the footage resides on the external drive, but I am runnig FCP off the hd, is this the correct setup?
Thanks for any input.

Where are you on this one? 🙂
Josh,
The F500 is a deck and interacts very much the same way a d-beta or beta sp deck would with FCP. You are just pumping it HD instead of SD. Plug in the HD-SDI video and deck control and you are off. Your posts seem deilberately vauge.
If you have HD footage on your drives then you know if your drives can play it back?
Who told you they would play back?
Is your KONA card a KONA 2 HD card?
Do you have a K-box attached?
With your expericence why would you think that running FCP off the hard drive is wrong?

Thanks for replying. I assure you my vaugeness is not deliberate. I have been editing video on FCP for 5 years now. But I have only worked with Mini-dv and a little Beta-sp. I have created this animation with some HD footage suplied to me on a hard drive from the client. I was originally told they wanted this on a DVD so I assumed I would just downconvert and go. Yesterday they told me they wanted it on HDCam so I am scrambling to rent a deck (they need it for Saturday).HD has been intimidating too me since generally all I heear about are special hardware and softwarre requirements. I was asking generally for any advice, because Im just anxious about something going wrong once I get thte deck and realize I wasn’t prepared. After your post I realize the question about the Hard drive was stupid. But I wasn’t sure about where the fast harddrive would come into play, obviously a slower drive would drop frames.
Nevertheless i am anxious and I appreciate all the advice ive gotten today.
If anyone is interested, ill be sure and write tommorrow to let you know how it goes.

I assure you I was not trying to rip and that was not the intention. The KONA 2 and the F-500 play well together. No question is a stupid question on teh COW or anywhere else.
Just make sure those drives can play back the Footage that you have there. It takes horsepower to move HD and the F-500 is not a cheap rental.
Any help I can offer, just ask.

September 8, 2005 at 10:50 pmJosh –
you have not specified SO MANY details about this project. IS is 23.98, or 59.94. How did you input this material – what VTR did you input the material from? Was it a Sony JH-3, or did you rent a F500 to dump out. Did you use the 2:3:3:2 pulldown, so your project is 59.94, or is it a 23.98 project? Do you want to create a 23.98 master, or do you want a 59.94 master for television distribution? If you want a 23.98 master, you will need a tri level sync generator.Josh – you may be in over your head, and the little posts from this forum may not
be enough. You should consider hiring someone to come in and help you – perhaps a tech from the rental company that will supply the HDW-F500. This is not a beta machine – there are a million setup menus on this VTR, and they are changed all the time, depending on what the project requirements are. You have given so few details to us on your original source tapes, and what the master tape must be. You have to know this stuff in advance, to plan for a smooth project. Working in HD is unfortunately much more complicated that working with regular NTSC video, becuase of the various formats, framerates, and numerous settings on these VTRs – particularly Sony VTR’s.If you post more details about your job – how you inputed your HD footage – what VTR you used, what your framerate is, what the delivery requirements are – they I can give you more info.
