    Josh –
you have not specified SO MANY details about this project. IS is 23.98, or 59.94. How did you input this material – what VTR did you input the material from? Was it a Sony JH-3, or did you rent a F500 to dump out. Did you use the 2:3:3:2 pulldown, so your project is 59.94, or is it a 23.98 project? Do you want to create a 23.98 master, or do you want a 59.94 master for television distribution? If you want a 23.98 master, you will need a tri level sync generator.

Josh – you may be in over your head, and the little posts from this forum may not
be enough. You should consider hiring someone to come in and help you – perhaps a tech from the rental company that will supply the HDW-F500. This is not a beta machine – there are a million setup menus on this VTR, and they are changed all the time, depending on what the project requirements are. You have given so few details to us on your original source tapes, and what the master tape must be. You have to know this stuff in advance, to plan for a smooth project. Working in HD is unfortunately much more complicated that working with regular NTSC video, becuase of the various formats, framerates, and numerous settings on these VTRs – particularly Sony VTR’s.

If you post more details about your job – how you inputed your HD footage – what VTR you used, what your framerate is, what the delivery requirements are – they I can give you more info.

Bob and everyone else who posted.

I appreciate all your help and comments, this project has not been fun from the beginging. The HD footage I recieved was shot with an endoscope and handed over to me on an external hardrive. As I stated in an earlier post I only found out they wanted it in HD 2 days ago. I agree with you Bob that I was in ver my head and I just took my animation/video to a tape duplication joint here in the city and they mastered it for me.

Thanks agian for all your help, I really appreciate the advice I get on this forum, even when the advice is “have someone else do it”.

This experience has made me think I need to get a better grasp on HD. Anyone have a good book they could recomend on how to make sense of it all?

there is no “book”. Every day is a new experience. You have to jump into the water, and figure out stuff, or have someone more knowlegeable to help you. We just sat around today with our working Kona 2/AJ-HD1200A system, and figured out how to get the J-H3 to work (the sony VTR), and what menu’s you have to setup (23.98PD means PULL DOWN !). You ain’t gonna get that in a book published 6 months ago – you have to READ the Sony manuals (or Evertz manuals, or what ever gear you are dealing with), and TRY IT , and make mistakes. What will now take me 2 minutes in the future took over an hour to figure out. I never said that you should not do this HD job, I said that you should GET HELP if it’s over your head. The only way to learn is to sit there, and suffer a little. Eventually, you will figure it out – and then, you will be the expert, and teach me !
