  • upconverting 525i29.97 to 1080psf23.98…frame blending issues

We have upconverted from miniDV (Canon XL2) 23.98p with 2:3 pulldown (source setting in Kona control as 525i29.97) to 1080psf23.98.

Kona control panel source setting: 525i29.97
    FCP Capture preset: 1080psf23.98
*FCP Capture preset custom input setting: 1080i29.97

We are experiencing some stuttering or what could be frame-blending issues. Any advice?

Is it better to achieve the 29.97 to 23.98 conversion in CinemaTools (reverse telecine) ?

I’d certainly experiment with CT’s conversion… that way it’s frame for frame right? then convert in software…

I would definitely not capture at a 23.98 setting. I think you are correct in removing the pulldown in Cinema Tools. Then, of course, edit in FCP in a 23.98 timeline.

I have a 23.976 project shot at 1080psf 8 bit using an F900, I also have an additional camera, Sony Z1 HDV which I’m shooting at HDV 25i, how can I get this footage into my project?

I had planned on using the Y Pb Pr into an AJA HD SDI analog HD to HD SDI converter which I bought to get the footage into my F500 using the 25i frame rate and then reset the F500 to playback as a 23.98 tape. I haven’t tried it yet and have heard that I needed the 3:2 pulldown option board which I don’t have installed.

Is there a software way to achieve this?

The Z1 is a handy third camera I was hoping to use for is small size for quick action inserts.

    thanks, Keith Collea

I capture HD component direct from the camera (using the FW connection for deck control) with the AJA HD10AC component to SDI converter direct via my Kona2 card.
Then I do not have to deal with the added layer of issues inherent when laying off an “off speed” format 25fps to a tape with a different frame rate 23.98 – I think this is just asking for more problems than you have already had. Slip the timebase in FCP / CT without having to deal with the pulldown removal at all.

That too would be an excellent workflow Gary… I’ve seen that DA do wonderful things to HDV material too. HDV is a rendering time hog… I”m hearing of extremely scary conversion times to MPEG-2 with it… really scary… HD takes a ton less time to down convert to SD DVD’s…and looks spectacular… (but I digress..)
