  • Sony High Density Tape Announcement Making a mess of the press!

    Hi Folks,

I’m sure you’ve been barraged with popular sites reporting on the Sony announcement about a 175TB tape over the past couple of days. Instead of reading the screwball sensationalization that much of the non-techical press writers are spewing, check out the actual press release here:

Sony develops magnetic tape technology with the world’s highest areal recording density of 148 Gb/in2

Basically, there are three important corrections to take from that release compared to what the “popular” tech pundits are putting out there –

    • This is not “Old School” or “Retro” as the technology being developed is far beyond anything that could have been done previously.
    • Sony has not created a new “Cassette” type – the word cassette is not used once in the release.
    • The technology is at least 4 to 5 years away from providing a useful commercial implementation.

Please don’t misinterpret my intent here – this is a very important step in the growth of tape media. It’s just that the speed with which the news channels are running at prevent them from checking their sources properly and making sure that the person writing the article actually understands the technology about which they are writing.

It’s really sad, but the days of responsible journalism appear to be long past and the number one rule of journalism – “Always double check your sources” – seems to have been forgotten.
