  • How to format LTO-5 tapes using BRU PE (and leave them BRU-compatible)

Posted by João Rebelo pinto on April 22, 2014 at 11:10 am

Good morning, everyone (or afternoon, depending on your timezone).

I have tried to format an LTO-5 before but unsuccessfully, since I am not LTO-savvy or terminal-savvy.
I have tried to put this question through the support in the past but for some reason my ticket simply disappeared.
I have some LTOs that I want to “recycle”, completely erasing the information I have inside and make them BRU-compatible.
How would you propose I do this, and could you please provide a detailed explanation (step-by-step)? I would be very much appreciated.

I have BRU PE version 3.0.2 (build 108), on a mac running 10.7.5, and I have an HP LTO-5 Ultrium 3000 tape drive.
Any more information I could provide, let me know.

PS: I guess this question could best be answered by TIM JONES, of TOLIS Group, but I don’t know how to tag him so he can see this… :/

The only thing you need to do is to go about your archive as usual.

Once you are ready to go, when you hit the button a menu will come up asking whether you are appending (adding) or overwriting. Choose overwriting and whatever existed on that tape before will be gone.

    Hi Joao –

No format required for BRU tapes. BRU uses the raw tape layer. Just pop the tape into the drive and tell BRU PE to write (overwrite a new tape since you can’t append to it 🙂 ).

BRU … because it’s the RESTORE that matters!

Every time I try to backup the tape ejects and says that it’s full, even when I check the overwrite button.

Hi, I have a similar problem… when Archiving I check to erase old information on the tape but it ignore it and ask for another tape, this tape is full. Did you have any luck with this?

    Hi, I’m using
HP StoreEver LTO-5 Ultrium 3000 SAS External Tape Drive
    https://h30094.https://www3.hp.com/product/sku/10240361

I tried a different cable (the one I was using was used for a LTO 4 tape drive)
and it seems to be working… is that possible that it was the cable?

Absolutely. We actually have custom 1 to 1 and 1 to 4 cables built for our solutions because we found that the generic cables available in the market were too unpredictable from a quality standpoint. They really start to demonstrate issues when we started driving LTO-6 at full speeds (180MB/sec ±).

I’m glad that you got that sorted.

I’m doing some tests to make sure this is working as it should, but I think this sorted out the problem.
I’ll post you to let you know the final result 🙂

    Thank’s for the help!
