Embedded captions
Is there any way to pass through/edit/share video – either in FCPX or Compressor – and preserve embedded closed captions within the exported video?

You can’t preserve them, but Compressor can add an scc file.

What do you mean, what format options?

You can only use .scc files. You can only add one caption file. So, for example, if I need both English and Spanish in one file, I can’t do that.

Hmm… I have ProRes files with two different embedded caption “tracks”. I can use Telestream Switch to trim those files and re-encode (in video pass-though mode) new versions, which maintain the existing, embedded captions.

You can add and edit captions in Premiere Pro and then export files with either “burned-in” (open) captions (subtitles) or with separate sidecar caption files.

My bad – I wanted to write “Apple MXF codec” since I assumed you wanted to use embedded scc for broadcast.

Not problem. However, in our case we had a master for broadcast on Univision (US Spanish language channel) and it was ProRes QuickTime with embedded English and Spanish closed captions. So MXF isn’t a given here.
