Creating Proxies outside of FCPX
Has anyone had any luck creating proxies somewhere else, such as compressor, so I can use FCP7 while I’m transcoding?

Magic Bullet Grinder from Red Giant works great for DSLR footage and what-not of you’re importing directly from an SD card or a complete image of one. Under $50. For free? MPEG Streamclip.

MPEG Streamclip is good, but I’d probably use compressor for this. I was just wondering if I could create my own proxy without having relinking issues. I plan to run a test and see what happens.

Ok, it does work fine. All you have to do is use the default proxy setting in compressor, then create the path /Transcoded Media/Proxy and drop your proxies in there. Make sure the proxies have the same clip name as the original clip. I have a feeling FCPX will be a lot faster if I do all my transcoding in compressor now.

I can be wrong, maybe I overlooked a setting, but in my experience, Mpeg Streamclip, although it converted faster then Compressor, it didn’t retain the original timecode of the original clips.
Which is deadly, if you are relinking, I would think… -
You may be right on the TC using Streamclip. Grinder from Red Giant is fantastic and will do proxies and full at the same batch for you. It retains everything and works wonderfully. I picked it up for $49 and it was well worth it.
