Optical Mess
Probably my first beef ever about this app.
I have brought this up before on others posts but I have to start my own.
This is the third project Ive had to use Optical Flow.
Its seems to be bunk when I use it.
Ive had major problems with snowboarding videos, then some basic motions and now I have a close to static shot of trees and my camera moves maybe for a few seconds.
Im still get that warpy messy look on the screen.
I have to avoid and use Frame Blending which isnt that great. -

This is all normal for any optical flow process. It’s entirely dependent on colors, contrast, detail in the background and horizontal camera motion. Some shots are great and others a mess. If you want something with a little more control, buy the Twixtor plug-in. But, it will not be perfect, either.

Thanks Oliver. Yes we have Twixtor on Avid at work and that too can get messy.

The last job like this I worked on, we had the DP shoot everything with Alexa at 120fps. “Normal time” footage was sped up 5x to achieve 24fps (with sync sound) and a few shots were slowed even more via Twixtor to the equivalent of 1200fps.

More artifacts than Twixtor. Mainly more apparent image stretching/morphing in the part of the image that I needed to keep clean. I ended up doing the final effects with Twixtor in AE. The other speed-ups (120 x 5 = 24fps) didn’t require optical flow.
