I have created a project in FCPx for an assignment for my masters.
I need to hand in two DVDs. One playable on a DVD player and one quick time file.
I have two problems – I can burn to DVD no problem from FCPx and it plays on the computer fine, but I have tried it on three DVD players – on one it won’t play at all
On one it freezes on a section with captions over pictures – and doesn’t play it right
On the third it jumps every few frames from widescreen to 16:9
    Any ideas?

My .mov file is 5.7GB which means I can’t burn it to my DVD-R which only takes 4.7GB, then only bigger DVD I can get is DVD+R – I can burn to it, but it plays back all slow and weird….
    HELP, assignment due in Friday!!

    Here’s what I would do:

Export a quicktime from FCPX, just use the timeline settings to get a raw video file.

Compress that file using compressor and an h.264 setting. The auto youtube one will be fine. That will compress it enough to make your data DVD.

Then use that quicktime to make your DVD-player DVD. What program are you using to burn it? Sounds like the data rate might be too high for older/cheaper DVD players. I prefer to use Toast with automatic settings for easy burning.

Thanks so much. I managed to get the DVD to work by burning it from IDVD with a quick time file instead of burning straight from FCPx. You’re probably right – FCPX was using too high a date rate.
Now I’m a bit of a novice – how do I find compressor – is it automatically on the macbook pro or do I need to buy it? I haven’t used Toast – is that user friendly?
    help hugely appreciated

For the sake of conversation, what about “share” to DVD from FCPX? Does this use the same compression as Compressor? Just curious.

To export a compressed video from FCX try this.

Share / Export Media (CMD E)

Then under video settings, select h.264

This should export a file the same frame size as your project, but compressed to a size that’s much more manageable.
