    I’ll just add that on virtually ALL the FCP X insider chat streams, the word appears to be “Migrate SLOWLY” and take care. Apparently Mojave includes some pretty deep changes – and this update, more than most, won’t be a just “go ahead and click and update” transition.

    The only thing about this eGPU implementation is that it is a toggle – either/or. It doesn’t do anything to combine the power of both the internal and the external GPUs.

    Hopefully next version of FCPX is optimized for eGPU so that it uses BOTH internal and external gpus.

    Currently, it’s not particularly help because it requires the newish Thunderbolt 3 and I would imagine most newish computer used by pro editors have pretty good gpus. But: if you could harness dual gpus, then you’d really have something.

    The reviews I’ve seen seem to hint that performance is split between the two by using the external for playback and internal for encoding tasks. Hopefully there will be a way of combining both but I haven’t seen evidence that works on any OS.

    I think DaVinci Resolve can use both the internal and external GPU. Not sure that’s always (or ever) the best practice for performance.

    I can do some tests! 🙂

    That’s the default unless you set the preference to the external.

    Interesting. So an iMac pro with a huge gpu in an external enclosure could be an absolute beast of a machine
