Announcing SpeedScriber automated transcription service
Today we’re excited to announce a brand new product, SpeedScriber which is currently in development and we think you’re going to like it.
Transcribing audio or video files is a common task for content creators but until now, the choice has been:
Transcribe manually which is very tedious and time-consuming,
Send the file to an external company which can be slow (typically 24 hours or more) and costly.
There’s a huge demand for affordable automated transcripts but sadly the technology has not lived up to the hype. Automated transcripts are usually so inaccurate (and unintentionally hilarious…) that they aren’t very useful.With SpeedScriber we’re aiming to change all that, with automated transcription that’s both fast and surprisingly accurate.
Get transcripts in real-time or faster, not hours or days.
Uses industry-leading automatic speech recognition technology for surprisingly accurate transcripts.
Supports English language speakers with American or British accents and detection of different speakers.
Automatic timestamps at regular intervals.
Specially developed tools for quickly making corrections to transcripts.

I know it’s still in beta but when the press release says “surprisingly accurate” that doesn’t really fill me with confidence. 😉
I hope they knock it out of the park though because an automated transcription program that’s accurate would be pretty awesome.

We only said “surprisingly accurate” because you’ll know that automated transcription in the past has been more like “depressingly inaccurate” 🙂
When you get to try it, you can let us know if you’re surprised or not!

I do a lot of doc/unscripted work and would love to automate the transcription process. Just call me a healthy skeptic. 😉
And I signed up for the mailing list so maybe I’ll get a copy of the Beta and be pleasently surprised sooner rather than later…?

Premiere Pro had this in earlier versions of their program and it either worked really well or not at all . When it worked it saved you hours of logging — when it didn’t – you wasted hours for a result hoping it would.

Someday we’ll be there. But in the mean time there is also a use for not completely accurate transcription. Imagine setting it loose on your entire hard drive worth of material. Now when you have to find that one clip buried in a two hour video clip, you can turn to your transcription. Who cares if it’s 100% accurate if you can find it in seconds instead of 30 minutes.

BTW I’m pretty sure “manual transcription” provider rev.com does automated transcription which is then sent out for review and correction.
I know this because some errors I’ve seen can only be explained by phonetic misinterpretation by an automated transcription.

With good quality audio you can expect 90%+ accuracy but it will vary. To give one example, I had a clip that transcribed to 700 words and only 5 of the words needed correcting. That comes out as 99.3% accurate.
I’m sure many transcription services use automated transcription as a first pass, but it seems strange that they wouldn’t correct all the errors if you’re paying them for accurate transcripts! Although to be fair, I guess this is inevitable if you’re asking a stranger to transcribe footage who doesn’t know any specialist words that you’re very familiar with.

I’ve been praying and begging for something like this to make captioning easier in FCPX and DVDSP. Can’t wait to try it out, hope I get an eval copy.

I’d just be very curious as to which speech-to-text technology they’re using, since I can’t imagine they could or would come up with their own, right? This is I’m assuming that’s not exactly a trivial task. That alone would say a lot about what can be expected in terms of accuracy, no?
I’ve also often wondered (here, too) why Apple doesn’t in fact just connect the dots between their already existing technologies? Have a “Transcript” button in FCP X that sends the audio to OS X’s built-in dictation, which in turn sends back the text in some way shape or form. In the notes field? As named favorites? Simple RTF? Whatever. Because I use the dictation a lot, even for several languages, and whilst it might be far from perfect (but still much better than what I ever got out of e.g. PPro back in the day), I’m still amazed at how well it does and how fast it’s become.

You might care if what you are looking for fell victim to the inaccuracy which means it doesn’t exist in the transcript even though the person said it. 😉
