Interesting, I like the new interface and the fact that on a Mac you can use ProRes. Also the crossgrade offer is continuing.

November 3, 2011 at 6:31 pmlooks great, lets hope its not ridden with bugs, etc. My only gripe is it needs Lion. Not really feeling that as of right now.
Also i wish you could still use 32bit plugins within it. I dont want to upgade Magic Bullit just cause i like the flicker plugin and i still use version 1.2. wich works great with MC 5.5.
Logic 9 lets you use 64 and 32 bit plug ins so i know its possible.

November 3, 2011 at 6:40 pmWhatever happened to that interface they had that was all bubbly and fisher price looking? When I demoed 5.5 recently, they had pretty much gone back to what I knew 10 years ago, with the new stuff added. Have they gotten rid of all the overlapping and confusing tools?

It will run on Snow Leopard. Their main testing was with Lion, so that’s the “certified” Mac OS version.

November 3, 2011 at 7:09 pmhmmm. They have “tabs” now at the window level and you can change the tabs into new windows etc like you would do with an adobe soft. It looks sleek and we didn’t loose any of our previous features :]

November 3, 2011 at 7:10 pmNot everything was converted to 64-bit so I guess you can still use them. They made a base layer they can build on.

November 3, 2011 at 7:11 pmIt’s also worth noting that this release also includes a new software-only version of Symphony (v6). This also runs with the same five 3rd party I/O hardware companies, plus Avid hardware. It’s at $6K and adds secondary color correction and universal format mastering with Avid hardware. The biggie is ProRes encode on a Mac through a licensing deal with Apple (MC, Symphony, NC).

November 3, 2011 at 7:23 pmWhat is the big advantage of Symphony over Media Composer? I’ve got a hard time seeing in bullets why I should choose the 6K app over the 1.5K app (since I’m an FCP user currently)?
Media Composer or Symphony with DaVinci and After Effects on the same system seems like a nice solution to FCP / Color / After Effects.

November 3, 2011 at 7:37 pmAfter Apple’s FCPX disaster, I was waiting to an alternative and it seams that we got it! I will wait for the trial to ensure the compatibility with our hardware and workflow based on prores files but 2012 will certainly be the year of my return to Avid after a couple of years with FCP.

I don’t disagree. Symphony gives you more advanced color correction – meaning, secondaries and the ability to grade by source, clip or reel. Plus a second level of correction (program track). Also universal mastering if you have Avid hardware. That means you can cut at 24 and output at 25 or 30fps.
Both MC and Symphony include Avid FX (Boris RED), so that’s equivalent to having AE in your timeline. New is that only Symphony now includes the BCC filters in the price. That would partly justify the difference in price.
If money is the main concern, then MC (with the FCP crossgrade) + Resolve Lite (free) would be your best bet. I’m not sure if there’s any sort of upgrade/crossgrade for Symphony.
