Mommy blogger rules
I see some folks posting on here that probably have a financial dog in this fight. That is they receive money, or an in-kind payment of some type from a software or hardware vendor. In the interest of fairness, and sticking with the so called FTC “mommy blogger rules” these relationships are required to be disclosed. I have yet to see anyone here or on other review sights and/or blogs make such a disclosure even though some of you have such an arrangement.
This is a partial synopses of the new FTC rules that apply:“The revised Guides specify that while decisions will be reached on a case-by-case basis, the post of a blogger who receives cash or in-kind payment to review a product is considered an endorsement. Thus, bloggers who make an endorsement must disclose the material connections they share with the seller of the product or service.”
I don’t believe an NDA, or a partial NDA that allows you to talk about the product, after its release exempts those that receive free copies of software, hardware or actual cash from having to disclose this relationship. In other words if you don’t want to or can’t talk about your relationship with a vendor, then technically you can’t review it either.
And in fairness to all those that read these posts, you should disclose relationships with any vendor that you are reviewing, or commenting on.Scott Sheriff
