  Using proxies from DNG

  Hello all,
  I jave just finished a raw production and I am now preparing the editing process.

  I have converted the raw files form ML into DNG files for Davinci. I will do a quick look and will export them into prores to edit in Premiere.

  My question : I will edit with prores files. When done, I will go back to Davinci for color grading. When that moment comes, will I be able to swap my prores files with the DNG ones ? Is that the whole principle of proxies ? I think it is but I wanted to be sure.

  I want my movie to be a black and white one. Obviously I have shoot in color and will do some channel mixing to go from color to B&W when the time comes. But I want to edit in B&W, so I wanted to do a simple desaturation when converting my DNG to prores. That is why I’d like to be sure that I will be able to swap the prores files with the DNG ones when my edit is completed.

  Hello,

  I did not receive an answer to my post, so I send it at the top again.
  My question is :
  Is the conversion from DNG to prores only to edit ? Will I be able to get back to the DNG files when color grading ? Is such case I don’t need to worry too much if I did not get the white balance right or any other adjustement when I created my prores proxies.

  Yes, you should be able to go back to the original DNG. It is a bit like working with Red footage. You edit the progress then relink to the original files.
