  • Removing Background from clip

I am new to AE and I was told that I should AE to remove the background from a clip rather than trying to do it in Final Cut Pro. I was able to do it in FCP by applying 2 garbage mattes but I am told the results are better in AE. I do have a AE book by Chris and Trish Meyer but I am lost at how to make effect of cutting out the background to work. I fooled around with the Auto Trace but nothing happened on my screen. I saw the message that said Auto Trace completed but nothing changed on screen. I was also told to use a MASK TOOL but that just put a big square on the screen. I have an interview clip of someone and I wanted to remove the background from the clip and put something else back there. This was NOT shot against a green screen.

    Thanks

search the archives for “rotoscoping” or “roto” and have a look in the tutorials sections…….

but basically I’d say start with the pen tool and draw a mask with it, move to the next frame and modify the mask, move to the next frame and modify the mask, move to the next frame and modify the mask….etc etc etc

wow that sounds complicated doing it like that. I take it there is no way to do it like you would in photoshop? Like using the markee tool or polygamy (spelling) tool to cut stuff out of the sho? If I have to go frame by frame that is going to be time consuming dont ya think?

if it’s an interview ( a person sitting on a chair and just talking) that means your object is not moving much, you most likely don’t need to modify the mask frame by frame, which is for moving objects.
