  Maximum RAM for After Effects

  I’ve read somewhere that the maximum RAM that windows allow an application to use is 2 gigabytes. I’m running after effects with these specs:

  Pentium 4 3.0 gig hyperthreading
  1 gig DDR Ram
  200 gig SATA hard drive

  In one forum, I was told that it was the application, and not windows, that limit the maximum RAM to 2 gig. So how do I increase the limit for After Effects? I think I can do more RAM previews in After Effects and faster work on Premiere Pro if I have about 4 gig of RAM. Thanks.

  there is a “hack” that you can do, maybe search the archives or google… But also read this:

  The RAM allocation is a limitation imposed by the OS. The maximum amount of memory that a 32-bit OS (like the non-64-bit version of Windows, or Mac OS X) can address is 4 GB. Since the OS requires a certain amount of that memory and needs to keep some more protected, they limit how much RAM individual applications can use. On Windows it’s 2 GB (as duffbeer911 pointed out, you can increase it to 3), and on OS X it’s around 3 GB.

  More RAM will make your work faster, yes, and also allow multiple applications to run at the same time more efficiently.
