  Adding effects (ie: Shatter) to the midpoint of a short video clip

  Hi,
  I need help in placing an effect like “Shatter” anywhere on the timeline to a short video clip. I have been successful in applying the effect but it occurs at the beginning of the clip. I would like the effect to happen later in the clip at my choosing. I have put a little time into trying to place/set markers for the effect to happen. I missed the memo somewhere?!?!

  Split the layer at the point where you want the shatter effect to begin and apply the effect to the later section.

  Yes, the Shatter effect is designed this way.

  There are two solutions:

  Easy: Split the clip (Edit > Split Layer) at the point where you want the shatter to begin, and apply Shatter only to the second instance. Downsides: if you’re using other effects or transformations you’ll have to coordinate between the two instances or tie them together with an expression.

  Harder: Set a Hold keyframe of value 0 for the Radius property in the Force 1 section of the shatter effect at the beginning of the layer. Then set a regular keyframe with the desired value at the point where you want it to start shattering. Downsides: None, really. It’s just more of a pain to set up.
