Do cellphone screens accurately represent what video looks like?
I have a 4K HDTV (Samsung, 43″) for a PC monitor, and a 4K Samsung high end tv in my tv room. They’re not calibrated (for what I do, it’s not necessary), but they’re pretty synced to where whatever my final render looks like on one looks the same on my tv room.
But on my LG 1080p cellphone, it always looks washed out. I just re-opened my last project and upped the saturation to where it looks pretty garish on my tv’s, but on my phone it looks good.
The thing is, other people’s videos that look great on tv also look great on my cellphone. Since no one except me really watches my videos, it’s not really that important, but just for my own FYI, should I put any weight at all into what my video looks like on my cellphone, and then adjust my settings on my tv’s accordingly?

Hi Duke,
Apparently you are wanting more information and you may think Tero’s reply was a bit rude. I commend him in providing the shortage answer, the fewest words using the shortest words, yet still providing a factual and accurate reply, keeping the time to compose and the bandwidth to post at a very minimum. I like it.
It doesn’t surprise me of the difference, I wouldn’t really expect all three preview devices to display accurately as in comparison.
Just my suggestion, but if you make a LUT with the changes required to display what looks good on your TV, to your projects so it looks good on your cell phone, you can apply that LUT in the future. In other words color and grade to look good on your TV and render, then apply the LUT and render a version for your cellphone.
Your cellphone probably does a good job of displaying accurately the video you shoot with it, as it will recognize what was shot with it’s sensor and codec. Not necessarily with footage from other sources.
With all the various custom settings available in various devices, I think it is fabulous that you have your small and large TV screens close!!

I don’t think Tero has a funny bone. He’s Abbott to my Costello. I’m sure he’s not thrilled that when you google his name, pictures of me pop up. Still trying to figure that one out myself. 🙂

I think Tero is a smart and funny guy, and he’s actually right.

Short version: everything looks different on uncalibrated devices, and some operating systems affect the accuracy of colors and level in playback.

Also this is one of those main issues that even professionals are still fighting with in professional color pipelines. It is a waste of time trying to get this thing working in real projects and it is even more wasteful if you’re a hobbyist using whatever gear of varying accuracy. Just do what you do and have fun with it.
