  • MacPro reboots after switching to GTX 980

I’ve just recently upgraded my GPUs from GTX 285s to GTX 690s. Resolve runs fine for a few minutes then the Mac just reboots. I suspect the CUDA drivers but I’m wondering if there is something else I can check. My machine specs are listed below.

    MacPro (mid 2010) 12 core 2.97Ghz 16GB RAM
    Mac OS 10.10.4
    Resolve (full) 11.3.1
    Desktop Video 10.4
    Cuda Driver 7.0.53 and 3.46.03f01

    Mac :
    ATI 5770 for GUI
    Decklink SDI
    Dulce SAS
    Cubix PCie Card

    Cubix :
    2 x Asus GTX 690 4GB DDR5

    Resolve

I’ve tried installing all the CUDA 7 drivers with no improvment. The only thing that seems to run for a longer period without crashing is when I set GPU processing to OpenCL but it still does reboot occasionally. The OpenCL does not work for me because it runs slower than my GTX 285s. Anything else that I can check?

Lastly I have Resolve 12 Beta installed on a seperate start up disk with the same drivers and also does the same thing (rebooting randomly).

I’ve connected the CUBIX 6 pin power connectors to the 8 pin adapter that came with the card.

I’d remove the ATI card and use one of the 690’s for gui. Also make sure you are using Nvidea’s driver from their website, not the Apple one. There is both a video driver and CUDA driver.

    Hang in there,

    Yes I’m using Nvidias drivers.

Is it then ok to use my old GTX 285 and use it as a GUI? Since OS X 10.10 only recognizes 2 GPUs do I have to uncheck ”Use GUI for compute’ ?

It still reboots while running Resolve. I removed the ATI card and replaced it with an Apple GT 120 Nvidia card for the GUI. Also unchecked the ‘Use GUI for compute’.

    Man that sucks.

I would pull everything out of it but the vid cards and see if that helps. Everything, including the card to the Cubix. Also reseat the RAM sticks.

If that doesn’t help, try just the GT120.

Is it perhaps overheating? As you may know, Resolve will stress a system like almost nothing else. Lots of math. Make sure the fans are running.

This could also be the power supply. The computer is pulling more juice doing work in Resolve.

I hope you find the issue,
    Robert

i was having a similar problem the 980 drivers are unstable and i could not find a solution, i had a ATI 5770 slot 2 for the gui and a nvidia 980Ti in slot one, after countless hours of every driver config i decided to sell the 980Ti and the 5770, reformatted my drive back to 10.9.5 and followed the Resolve config guide, put a 680 & a titan black. its back to a solid system.

Good to know as the 980Ti is on my list as possible replacements for my Titan.

Did you try it without the ATI?

    Thanks,

i was just informed that a new driver was released today 346.02.02f02 this might fix the issue, and yes ATI and Nvidia dont play nice together.

I swapped out the ATI card for the GT 120 same problem the system works for a while then suddenly just reboots. And like Greg I did countless trials of Nvidia GPU and CUDA driver combination with no success. I was just about to give up until I decided to revisit the power connectors in the CUBIX.

My ASUS GTX 980 has two power connectors, a 6 and 8 pin, I used the included 8 pin to dual 6 pin adaptor from the kit to hook up the card to the Cubix. What I did differently this time was to plug one of the extra 6 pin connectors into the remaining power slot on the GTX 980 (I was afraid it would fry the card, but I had no other options left).

Well I’m happy to report it now works flawlessly with both R11 and R12 with the ATI 5770 as GUI (also set ‘Use GUI for compute’ to ON).
