I have a dim soft spotlight sweep across a grey background. As the tones of grey change there is a virtual parade of banding. Is there anyway to fix this?

As I watch television you rarely see subtle moving tones in graphics. I wonder if banding is the reason.

    Thanks for your help.

Work your project in 16 bits instead of 8. Or, if that doesn’t work (it probably will, however, as long as any effects you are using are 16-bit-able), add some noise to your comp, which will break up the banding (though it usually won’t entirely fix the problem).

Could one add blur along with the noise? How much noise? How much blur? Would the blur just reintroduce the banding?

    Thanks

Yes, blur would reintroduce the banding. If 16 bit didn’t help just add noise.
