I’m creating a running clock animation for a sports webcast that uses Telestream’s Wirecast. Because the composition is very long (the length of the game), I’d like to know the best route to deliver a QuickTime with alpha that minimizes file size.

There’s really no such thing as a light-weight production codec that supports alpha.

For a clock, I’d use QuickTime Animation codec, but since it only update every second, I’d make the comp and output movie run at 1fps; that’ll instantly cut the file size by a factor of 30.

1 fps is a great idea. Another thing to consider is having separate rgb and alpha movies, and luma matting/track matting the color movie with the alpha. Then you can use whatever codec you want for your rgb. Depending on your animation, for something like a clock, you might even be able to use a still image for your alpha channel.
