First of all, I would apologise if this is posted in the wrong section or something. I am new to this site 🙂

    Anways, here’s my problem.

I have looked far and wide into the oceans from tutorials to forums etc, but I cannot seem to find the solution to the problem. I am pretty frustrated…

I am using adobe after effects cs6 and I have decided to track my footage with 3D Camera Tracker. However, the mountain in my footage seems to shift back and forth abit. I know it is not a good footage to track as there are a few targets.

The same thing has also happened with Mocha CS6. I have looked at dozens of tutorials but to no avail. This is what I have done:

I used the “X Spline Layer Tool” and drew around the area that the mountain will appear in.
I then tracked it with the button “track forward”. Everything was fine, everything was fully tracked.
I then pressed “Export tracking data”- After Effects Transform data.
In Adobe, I create a “Null”. Pasted the tracking data. Unticked “anchor points”. Parented the mountain to “null”.

However, despite the excellent tracking in Mocha, the mountain still shifted around. I am on the brink of giving up. However, when I use a different element such as a fire, it tracks perfectly.

Sorry, for the lengthy post. Please help. I am even willing to send my project so you professionals can help me out. Any advice/ tips/ or anything would be appreciated.

You should track just the horizon – a single plane. Your tracking spline covers two different planes; the horizon and the water.

Track again in mocha but restrict your tracking spline to the edge of the water and include some of the cloud/sky area.

I suggest that you watch the following tutorials as you seem to not understand what planar entails –

Start here – https://www.imagineersystems.com/videos/steve-wright-planar-tracking/view. Then look for the other tutorials in the “Learn mocha” series which were authored by Steve Wright.

Then reinforce what you’ve learned with these other tutorials –

I’m also surprised that you’ve successfully linked to another object. There’s obviously some difference between these two objects that you’ve not shared.

Yes – as Roland suggests, you need to track 1 plane in mocha. The water is obviously moving on a different plane than the clouds in the background and will throw off your track.

I would suggest tracking just the clouds in a smaller shape if you are trying to do sky replacement.

mocha V3 has a 3D solver in which the user tracks multiple planes, than does a camera solve on the selected planes, but first you need to get a good grasp of how planar tracking works.

    Best,

Thanks for the reply. I’ll give it a try. But, how do you differentiate one plane from the another? I thought you simply create a spline or a box around the area, and place the mountain in the area that you tracked in Mocha.

[Simon Huang] “But, how do you differentiate one plane from the another?”

Your question is incredibly basic – it is something you should know prior to tracking with mocha. You were provided with a couple of URLs to help you in this area. Please do the neccesary.
