  • Correct workflow for dealing with around 100 rotoscoped video layers?

    Hello Everybody!

I am looking for the best way for compositing around 100 rotoscoped layers.
What I want to acheive is similar to this effect:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhgYrY8fN-0

I tried to test with 10 layers of HD video in an AE composition,
but very quickly I realized that is definately not the way to go.

What would be the most reasonable way to create such a composition?

    Thanks,
    Eran.

[Eran Amir] “I tried to test with 10 layers of HD video in an AE composition,

Why did you come to that conclusion? Performance reasons or was execution difficult? It would help to know what issues you’re trying to avoid.

I think it’s both reasons together… Rotoscoping took extremely long or didn’t react at all because it was so slow. And I couldn’t get the thing to render without AE choking. I think using the original video footage was too much, or?

    Thanks,
    Eran.

In the piece you linked to I would have used layer masks for all the aircraft. Rotoscoping is very intensive on both your time and and your machine. How are you trying to render, full Animation codec will be a massive file and most likely choke. Try running each as a precomp after you rotoscope it. Also make sure when you start rendering you clear your ram cache. This will impact your render ability since rotoscope uses a lot of ram.

Yeah, rotoscoping is no doubt my biggest challenge.
Problem is I am not using planes in my project,
so unfortunately I will have to rotoscope intensively and not use layer masks.

    Thanks,
    Eran.

Look at using mocha for your rotoscoping tasks. mocha is exceptional for tracking-assisted rotoscoping tasks.

Further, there seems to be an issue with terminology – rotoscoping also means masking if you’re masking to create articulated mattes.
